Annual Open Enrollment (AEP)

Every year from October 15 to December 7, the Medicare enrollment dates mark the start of the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). This is the dedicated time for anyone currently on Medicare to review their existing coverage, including Medicare Part D and Prescription Drug Plans, and make changes for the upcoming year. A Standalone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), which falls under Medicare Part D, is a private insurance policy that you purchase to enhance your healthcare with retail drug coverage. This plan is specifically tailored for individuals who retain Original Medicare (Part A and/or Part B), including seniors who choose to add a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy for additional medical coverage.

It's important to note that this plan exclusively covers outpatient prescription medications and does not extend to doctor visits, hospitalizations, or dental and vision services. Be sure to keep track of Medicare enrollment dates to ensure you can enroll in the right Prescription Drug Plans.

Monthly Premiums

Deductibles & Copays

To keep your drug coverage active, you will pay a monthly premium directly to your private insurance carrier. These premiums vary by plan and location. Keep in mind that if your income is above a certain level, the government may add a separate adjustment called IRMAA to your premium.

Most plans have an annual deductible you must meet before coverage kicks in. Once met, you will pay a set copay or a percentage (coinsurance) for your medications. Your costs will depend on which 'tier' your drug falls under on the plan's formulary.
